It's more about the thinking and psychology that goes into the effects you're performing. But it should still be part of your education to see where it all started. I would also recommend Osterlind's excellent DVD series based on this book. It does a great job of bringing the material to life; however, don't make the mistake of thinking the DVDs are an adequate substitute.
